Pavement Sutra
I left the café
and wandered to the park—
small,
a scattering of pigeons
as usual.
A Chinese man rode in
on a motorcycle,
a strange sight in such stillness.
My mind, quick as always,
cast a judgment.
But I caught it midair
like a feather
before it could land.
Moments later,
He was feeding the pigeons—
His gentle rebellion
against my assumption.
Birds gathered like students
around a silent teacher
on two wheels.
I turned away,
back to my breath.
Step. Inhale.
Step. Exhale.
Not watching the world now,
but feeling
each grain of the path beneath my sandals.
Eyes to pavement.
Mind to silence.
Like Gautama,
I walked without hunger
for scenery,
for stories,
for themselves.
And in that stillness,
a deeper seeing unfolded—
not out there,
But in here.
