My Car’s Radiator Is Leaking 28 March 2005 - Revised.

There's a story to be told even in old cars.

My Car’s Radiator Is Leaking

28 March 2005

They say bad things come in threes. I suppose it’s true.

First, I’m heading for broke. Second, my wife is suffering from a form of dementia and most likely has been terminated from her job. And now I need RM2000 just to get her re-registered under a spouse-dependent visa.

And to top it off? The washing machine—a high-tech contraption proudly brought to you by Samsung Industries—is now officially dead.

So here I am, venting my frustrations into the blogosphere. Let the world hear my ramblings. Welcome to reality. This is what the Buddha meant when he said life is dukkha—life is suffering.

But He also said Suffering is—yet none who suffers.
And he added Nirvana is—yet none who attains it.

I wonder what He meant.

That ancient Hindu prince, who later became a mendicant monk, saw deeply into the truth of this Mayavic world more than 2,500 years ago. Do you see it too? Do you know what Maya is? Do you even care—or are you comfortably numb with what you’ve got in life?

Last night, I read a Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about suffering. It struck a chord.

He said: through pain and hardship in this life, Allah is cleansing us of our sins—so that when we arrive in the Hereafter, or on Judgment Day, there’s less weighing to be done when it comes to where we belong. Heaven or Hell. H&H.

So despite everything that’s shaken my will to stay cool and calm, I’m pouring it out now. I’m spitting it into the universe for the stars to hear. And once I’m done, I’ll head to the mechanic—Azhar will pick on me as usual while fixing the radiator.

That’s okay.

I’ve learned to turn every negative episode into something useful. Into a story. Into art. Into understanding.

After all, it could’ve been worse.

I could’ve been swept away with the coconuts when the tsunami hit Penang Island. I was there, sketching a pinang tree, not too far from the sea.

See ya.
