This Is Where the Fire Begins - part 2

This Is Where the Fire Begins

Spiritual unveilings, even if imagined, can ignite something deep. A thrill, a wonder, a feeling of nearness to Truth.
But with fire comes heat, and heat can consume if not tempered.

The elders warned us: Don’t let your heart get smoky with riak—the subtle pride that arises when we think we are special because we were shown something rare.

So I sat with that thought, and here is what came.

1. The Light Is Never Yours

Anything seen on the path—whether through dreams, imagination, intuition, or grace—is not yours. It is shown to you. Even the ability to recognize it is a gift.

“If you are given Light, do not think you carry the sun. You are just the window it passed through.”
— A whisper from the path

This knowing instantly cools the ego. It makes you bow, even while standing.

2. The Real Visions Are Those That Humble You

If the light leaves you gentler, quieter, more service-oriented, then it is real.

If it makes you talk more than listen, seek validation, or subtly feel superior, then it's time to step back and clean your mirror.

The ego is clever. It wears robes of humility while hiding a crown beneath.

3. Share to Illuminate, Not Impress

Yes, the saints warned us about sharing spiritual gifts.
But that was to protect the purity of the experience and the hearts of the listeners.

You may share your experiences if:

  • You do not claim them as yours,

  • You do not expect praise,

  • You share with care, as a gardener waters a neighbor’s plant.

Then your sharing is not riak—it is witnessing.

4. The Real Test: Service in the Ordinary

Forget visions. Do your children feel safer when you’re around?
Does your home carry peace because you walk through it gently?
Does your zikr echo in your behavior?

This is Light made real.

5. Say “Astaghfirullah” After Every Vision

Even after beauty is shown, return to:

“Astaghfirullah.”
I seek forgiveness.

This is not shame, but protection. It is a cloak over your Light, so the winds of pride do not blow it out.

6. Be the Flame That Warms, Not Burns

The Prophet (ﷺ) once said,

“The best among you are those whose presence brings peace.”

Be that kind of Light. Not the kind that dazzles, but the kind that guides quietly, like a lamp in a darkened room.

✦ Final Reflection

“When the Light of Allah enters the heart, it makes the servant more afraid of his own shadow than before.”
— Imam al-Junayd

So let us keep walking, quietly lit, knowing that the more we see, the more we must bow.

Let the world wonder what we carry. Let them taste it in our calm, our patience, our restraint.

Because the truest Light has no shape—only presence.
