The Kapas Retreat Sanctuary: A Vision by Shamsul Bahari

The Kapas Retreat Sanctuary: A Vision by Shamsul Bahari

"A space to return to simplicity, creativity, and soulfulness."

Background & Inspiration

This morning, I received a heartfelt message from my friend Kayan Ratnam:

"Just saw something on Facebook about you planning something in Terengganu. I like the idea and I have a place on Kapas you could use. Keen to help."

It was an unexpected gesture that reaffirmed a quiet but persistent dream: to create a space for healing, expression, and reflection on the island of Pulau Kapas.

Pulau Kapas—its pristine beaches, its gentle pace of life, its sense of separation from the world's noise—has long stirred in me a calling to offer something meaningful back to the community and to those wandering in search of reconnection.

The Vision

To establish a modest, soul-centered retreat space on Pulau Kapas—a sanctuary where:

  • Children from the mainland can explore their creativity through free art classes.

  • Travelers, seekers, artists, and wanderers can find a place for contemplation, silence, and renewal.

A blend of Zen hermitage and kampung classroom, this sanctuary will not be a commercial retreat or tourist destination, but a living, breathing space for sharing and stillness.

Core Intentions

  • To offer free creative education for children, especially from underserved or rural communities.

  • To provide a space of stillness and simplicity, rooted in spiritual practices such as zazen, dhikr, reflective journaling, and mindful art-making.

  • To use art as a bridge between cultures, generations, and inner lives.

  • To embody the Middle Way, balancing solitude with service, form with formlessness.

Why Kapas?

  • Its natural beauty and gentle pace are ideal for a spiritual and creative retreat.

  • Its proximity to the mainland makes it accessible for weekend visits by children and volunteers.

  • Its small scale ensures sustainability without the pressures of mass tourism.

  • The generosity and support of a kindred spirit like Kayan Ratnam open the door for grounded beginnings.

This Is Not a Business.

There is no profit motive. No branding strategy. This is a living offering—a personal vow to share what I have learned and lived.

In the twilight of my years, I wish to leave behind a space where silence is honored, art is practiced with intention, and hearts can return to the rhythm of being.

Next Steps

  • Site visit and discussion with Kayan Ratnam

  • Gathering basic materials and supplies

  • Reaching out to volunteers, educators, and artists

  • Setting up simple infrastructure for shelter, studio, and classroom space

If the universe wills it, the Kapas Retreat Sanctuary will begin as a quiet ripple—and perhaps grow into a still lake of peace for all who arrive.

With gratitude and humble hope,
