Destroying my Ego from destroying me
The Subtle Weight of What We Consume
I have been watching Game of Thrones reruns for my pastime, and my dreams are influenced by the complicated themes of human indignities towards one another in all their forms of decadence and intrigues. How we fill the mind with the garbage of life orchestrated by others for entertainment and spend hours on end sitting in meditation to get rid of the monkey mind—what irony.
Digging deeper, the impact isn’t just on the mind. The body carries it too. Migraines upon waking, subtle aches and pains—symptoms unconsciously linked to the content we consume. What we watch, read, or listen to doesn’t vanish into thin air. It embeds itself in the nervous system, showing up in the most ordinary ways.
Even more, it distracts us from what is right before our eyes: the daily chores, responsibilities, and opportunities for presence. Escapism, whether through media or fantasy, has its cost. Meditation helps, yes—but meditation alone isn’t the whole solution.
Journaling itself, this very act of writing, is another important means. The Buddha called such tools skillful means—ways of neutralizing the negative effects of the very conditions we’ve brought upon ourselves. Putting thought into words transforms the weight we carry into something lighter, shared, and perhaps even meaningful for others.
So it becomes a balance: not rejecting what the world offers, but being aware of what we invite into our field. Aligning mind, body, and spirit through meditation, reflection, and prayer clears the way for clarity. Alignment doesn’t mean perfection—it means remembering our center, again and again.
