September Begins: A Step into Healing
August has passed, and today, on the first of September, I feel a new journey unfolding — a journey of healing, both for myself and perhaps for others.
Yesterday, I saw suffering up close. I visited Ben, a dear Australian brother living with manic depression. Normally full of words, he was silent — and his silence spoke volumes. Later, at a café, I met the wife of an artist friend. She lives with autism and carries the heavy burden of caring for her husband, who is slowly being overtaken by muscular dystrophy. Her story was raw and real.
One silent.
One open.
Both reminded me that suffering is woven deeply into human life. And in their presence, I felt something awaken in me: the first steps of my journey as a healer.
That night, I dreamed I was back at the SRI Lovely Organic Farm. But the Captain I once knew was replaced by a towering Black man, a fatherly figure seated in a machine. When I asked permission to leave the farm, he told me simply:
“You are free to do as you please.”
I kissed his sweaty head, and in that moment he felt like my father. Later, I understood: he was my shadow — the darker side of myself I had long feared. But instead of standing in my way, he set me free.
To heal others, I must first embrace and heal myself. That dream was my confirmation.
So today I begin — with willingness, with presence, and with the prayer:
Make me a vessel of healing.
Let me heal by being healed.
Let me serve by being emptied.
Let miracles flow through me, not from me.
