The Blood Moon and the Return of Awe

The Blood Moon and the Return of Awe

Tonight, the heavens stage a rare performance: a total lunar eclipse, the so-called blood moon. The familiar silver face of the moon will be washed in deep red, a sight that has stirred the human heart since time immemorial.

For our ancestors, such a spectacle was never ordinary. The blood moon was a cosmic signal — an omen, a blessing, a mystery. It forced them to stop, to look up, to feel small yet connected. That is the power of awe: it interrupts the ordinary and reminds us that life is more than survival, more than routine.

In today’s world, this capacity for awe is quietly eroding. Surrounded by constant noise, screens, and distractions, we rarely pause long enough to feel the vastness of existence pressing gently against our awareness. The blood moon arrives like a teacher, asking us to remember.

When we stand under its eerie glow, we are pulled into a deeper state of being. Psychologists call this “awe-induced self-transcendence” — the moment when ego softens, and we recognize ourselves as part of something much larger. Spiritually, the blood moon becomes a mirror of the soul: red with passion and fire, it whispers of cycles, endings, and rebirths. It does not just illuminate the sky; it illuminates our forgotten depths.

The blood moon tells us: remember your capacity for wonder, for reverence, for awe. In this remembrance, we recover what is most human and most divine within us.

And so, I write this entry not just as a personal note on the calendar of my life, but as a reminder to all of us: look up. Pause. Feel the awe that is still yours, waiting to be rediscovered.
