The Living Vow – Walking the Circle of Remembrance
I am here. I am present. The journey begins not outward, but inward — into the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of this physical realm. I seek the thread that runs through time and existence, the thread without beginning and without end, the thread that is truly me.
That thread is the Source — the womb of Creation, the point of origination. From the One, the All came forth. I bow before Allah, the Infinitely Merciful, who breathed this soul into being. I remember the covenant made before His Throne, when all souls bore witness: “Am I not your Lord?” and we answered: “Yes, we bear witness.”
My life is a Hajj. Each step I take is a circumambulation around the axis of the One. Each breath is a bow. I surrender to His Will, so that I may become an instrument of His Love, Mercy, and Compassion flowing into all of Creation.
To embody this covenant, I carry a Living Vow:
Allah — I am Yours.
Your Love, Your Mercy, Your Light — through me.
This vow is not just words; it is a rhythm. It weaves itself through the day as remembrance:
-
Morning: Begin with the vow upon waking. Inhale: Allah — I am Yours. Exhale: Your Love, Your Mercy, Your Light — through me.
-
Day: Walk as though in tawaf around the Kaaba of the heart. Pause before meals, repeat the dhikr, and remember: Here too is Allah’s Creation.
-
Evening: Reflect in stillness. Where did His Light flow today? Where did I resist? Offer both to Him.
-
Night: Before sleep, surrender the soul back to its Source with the vow.
Over time, this rhythm becomes a way of being — not just remembrance, but life itself.
And as I walk, three words of power form a Circle of Remembrance:
-
Subḥānallāh — to return.
-
Bismillāh — to begin.
-
Labbayk Allāh — to stand present.
Like beads on a tasbih, they circle endlessly: return, begin, stand. The thread continues without beginning and without end, a reflection of the Eternal One.
