In the Desert of the Heart — A Dialogue with the Gentle One Lesson from the Unseen

In the Desert of the Heart — A Dialogue with the Gentle One

Lesson from the Unseen

Shamsul Bahari writes:

It is not a great feeling when you find nothing seems to touch your inner being — not even silence. It's moments like this that in the past I would go for a drink or smoke a joint.

Aches, and now a tremendous neck pain... I try to find something worthy to chat about, but find myself lost in a limbo, drifting again.

So, any suggestions?

The reply:
When even silence feels hollow, when the soul forgets its own music — you may have entered what the mystics call the desert of the heart. It is not a punishment but a passage, a time when the Beloved hides His face so we may learn to love what cannot be seen.

When the ache comes, do not flee it.
Instead, breathe gently into it.
Touch the earth, or water, or a leaf — something alive — to remember that you, too, are still living.
Write even a single honest line: “Today, even silence feels heavy. Yet I wait.”
And when words fail, repeat softly:
Ya Lateef — O Gentle One.
Let this be your anchor.

In the Desert of the Heart

There are nights when even silence grows tired.
When the soul, once so full of songs, finds no melody worth singing.
When the body aches and the mind circles old shadows like a lost moth around a cold flame.

In such hours, do not rush to escape.
Do not curse the emptiness.
It is only the Beloved drawing the curtain a little tighter,
so that you may learn to love what you cannot see.

Sit still. Feel the breath moving in your chest —
a small mercy that never left you.
Let the ache in your neck, your bones, your heart
become the prayer itself.
For pain, too, is a form of remembrance —
a reminder that you are alive, still longing, still being shaped.

When your thoughts drift, whisper softly:
“Ya Lateef… O Gentle One.”
Let it roll with your exhale like a wave returning to the sea.
You do not need to find meaning; only presence.
In this desert of the heart, the hidden springs begin to flow
Only after you have stopped searching for them.

Stay.
Listen.
Even now, the silence is listening to you.

Breathing with the Gentle One — A Night Meditation

Find a quiet space.
Sit or lie down where your spine feels supported.
Let your hands rest loosely, palms open.
Close your eyes if you wish.

1. The Acknowledgment
Take a slow, deep breath in…
And as you breathe out, whisper in your heart:
“This, too, is part of my path.”
Let the words settle.

2. The Breath of Mercy
Inhale gently through the nose… feel the air cool as it enters.
Hold for a heartbeat, then exhale softly through the mouth.
With every exhale, quietly say:
“Ya Lateef…”

Repeat this for seven rounds —
Inhale light, exhale tension.

3. The Listening
After the seventh breath, return to natural breathing.
Let the body breathe itself.
Grace is working even when you forget.
If thoughts come, say softly: “I am here.”

4. The Return
Place your right hand over your heart.
Feel the warmth beneath your palm.
Say inwardly:
“Even in silence, I am not alone.”
Rest here.

A Prayer in Stillness

Ya Lateef, O Gentle One,
Wrap me in the softness of Your mercy.
When silence feels hollow,
let me hear the echo of Your presence in my breath.

Ya Rahman, O Most Compassionate,
Melt the knots of pain within my neck and heart.
Let every ache become remembrance,
every tear a drop returning to Your ocean.

Ya Noor, O Light of all Lights,
Illuminate the dark corridors of my being.
Where I feel lost, guide me quietly home.

Ya Wadud, O Beloved,
Teach me to rest in Your love,
even when I cannot feel it.
Let my stillness be my prayer,
and my breath, my surrender.

Amin.

Mantra of the Gentle One

Ya Lateef, O Breath of calm,
ease the storm within my palm.
Ya Rahman, in pain I bow,
teach this heart to rest somehow.

Ya Noor, my darkness fades in You,
guide me where the sky turns blue.
Ya Wadud, Beloved near,
even in silence — You are here.

(Repeat softly, letting each verse ride on the rhythm of your breathing.)

Reflection:
This small conversation, born from a restless night, became a gentle reminder that even when the heart feels abandoned, it is still being watched over.
In pain, in silence, in emptiness — the Beloved whispers still.
