🌿 The Virtues of Ayat al-Kursi
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
"Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum..."
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence…”
🌟 The Greatest Verse in the Qur’an
Ayat al-Kursi stands as the greatest verse in the Qur’an, as affirmed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Muslim 810). It embodies the essence of Tawheed—the oneness and absolute sovereignty of Allah. Within its words reside the attributes of divine perfection: Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living), Al-Qayyum (The Sustainer of all existence), the One whose knowledge encompasses all, and whose authority reigns over the heavens and the earth.
To recite it is to acknowledge that nothing exists independently of Allah—He is the Source, the Witness, and the Sustainer of all.
🌙 A Protection Against All Evil
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and Paradise except death.”
(An-Nasa’i, Ibn Hibban)
He also taught that one who recites it before sleep will be guarded by Allah through the night. Abu Hurairah (ra) was once taught this by a mysterious visitor (later revealed to be Shaytan). The Prophet ﷺ affirmed:
“He told you the truth, though he is a liar.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Thus, Ayat al-Kursi serves as a spiritual armor, a shield from unseen harm, and a light against darkness.
☀️ A Gateway to Divine Knowledge and Tranquility
Ayat al-Kursi is not only a protection—it is a doorway to divine understanding.
It reveals the vastness of Allah’s knowledge:
“He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.”
His Kursi (Throne) symbolizes His boundless dominion—extending beyond human imagination—while His sustaining power is effortless:
“And their preservation tires Him not.”
For the seeker, it offers solace. In times of anxiety, fear, or confusion, its recitation reconnects the soul to the eternal truth that Allah never sleeps, never forgets, and never leaves His creation unattended.
🌿 A Reflection for the Heart
Each line of Ayat al-Kursi is an ocean of wisdom:
-
“La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm” – Allah is never overtaken by drowsiness or sleep; His vigilance is absolute.
-
“Wasi‘a kursiyyuhu as-samawati wal-ard” – His Throne extends over all existence, seen and unseen.
-
“Wala ya’uduhu hifzuhuma” – His guardianship is effortless.
For the one who reflects, these words dissolve fear and awaken awe—the realization that everything is held in divine balance.
🕊️ The Living Light
Ayat al-Kursi is not merely a verse; it is a living invocation, a light for the heart and shield for the soul.
When recited with awareness, it grounds the spirit in divine presence. It calms the mind, fortifies faith, and rekindles remembrance (dhikr) of the Most High.
“And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
Wa huwa al-‘Aliyyu al-‘Azeem.
