PENANG SECOND CROSSING BRIDGE PROJEC

BACKGROUND::  6 Sept.2006  - received notification from the Govt. of Malaysia (GOM) that privatisation of the Penang Second crossing Bridge project (P2X) will be by UEM Group Bhd. GOM will subsequently issue RFP document to UEM Group Bhd.

28 Sept 2006 - GOM issued RFP document. UEM to submit privatisation  proposal within 3 months.

12 Nov.2006 - Ground breaking ceremony for P2X by the Prime Minister. (Koh Tsu Koon). PM announced that the project will be completed by Dec.2010.
I was on hand to make sure that the Chief Minister had a safe trip from the jetty at Bayan Bay for his trip to Batu Kawan on this date as i was the Jetty supervisor back then for the Jerejak resort and Spa and this was how i got the detailed infos on the project.

27 Dec. 2006 - Privatisation Proposal submitted to EPU.

KEY DESIGN PARAMETERS - Length of bridge - 17 km.
Length of Expressway - 7 km.
Overall Capacity - Dual 2 traffic lanes plus motorcycle lane in each direction.

No. of Piers - 337 Nos.
Construction method - Pre-cast Segmented Box Girder
Navigational Channel - Height Clearence ; 30m  Draft ; 6m
2 Nos of Elevated Observation Platforms - At CH 8.km

Location - Batu Kawan - Batu Maung

Now it is Dec-2011 and this is how far the project has progressed since the day of the CM's ground breaking ceremony, one wonders what happened along the way,is it politics or is it just a matter of priorities.
