Preparing for the Feast 2

Wondering what i was going to have for Breakfast this morning I decided to sweep the grounds while dwelling on it. My friend Sobri below arrived and told me that we were to go to a wedding preparation which is a village effort, what the Malays call 'Gotong Royong" or in in a communal spirit. Each person was assigned a job to do and all was planned such that the Father of the house has not much to do but entertain the guests.

The man responsible for my being here is a unique character on his own. Holds a good position in the government services and has a very strong civic sense of duty towards the well being of the society he grew up in.

"Masak Kawah" or cauldron cooking for massive amount of food to be prepared and the specialty of this area is Kuah Gulai batang pisang" or the banana stem curry. This is the only place where this curry is prepared and it was the result of not having enough to feed so many in the old days

The banana pith the center where it is soft and edible. This cheap source of food is now a much sought after recipe. It is usually cooked with meat. The other recipe that is also common to this villages is the fried Banana flower or Jantung Pisang.

The men are usually in charge of the cooking and the preparation of the meat from slaughtering to the washing and cutting to sizes as required. All done in a voluntary spirit which today in the suburban areas and the big cities is slowly diminishing as the weddings at these places are being done by catering businesses.

Perhaps this too is a fading  practice in time when life takes on a more city like in character
Cooking by fire adds more to the taste of the food according to these folks.
